Traditional Mexican Buñuelos
As the holiday season approaches, the air fills with excitement and the aroma of delightful treats. Among the many beloved traditions celebrated in Mexico, one that stands out is the posadas. These festive gatherings bring family and friends together to commemorate the journey of Mary and Joseph in search of shelter. And what better way to revel in the joy of posadas than by enjoying the mouthwatering delicacy of Mexican buñuelos? Today, we dive into the history of posadas and explore the irresistible allure of these crispy, sugary delights.
Posadas, meaning “inns” or “lodging” in Spanish, has been a cherished Mexican tradition for over 400 years. It originated from the Catholic faith and serves as a reenactment of Mary and Joseph’s quest for a place to stay in Bethlehem. Commencing on December 16th and culminating on December 24th, posadas are celebrated over nine nights, symbolizing the nine months of Mary’s pregnancy.
During each posada, participants divide into two groups: the peregrinos (pilgrims) and the posaderos (innkeepers). The peregrinos journey from house to house, carrying candles and figurines of Mary and Joseph, while singing traditional songs requesting shelter. Upon receiving the request, the posaderos, who represent the innkeepers, often deny entrance until the final house, which symbolizes the stable where Jesus was born. Once welcomed, everyone gathers for prayers, piñatas, and, of course, a feast that includes the delectable buñuelos.
