Today is the Mexican celebration of Dia del Niño. Typically, the holiday is celebrated by spending time with your children and organizing or attending cultural activities, entertainment, or simply, a day at the park. But there is a deeper meaning to this celebration.
In 1954, UNICEF developed this holiday as a way to promote a day dedicated to the brotherhood and understanding among children around the world. Since then, more than 100 countries celebrate Dia del Niño, even though dates vary by location. International Children’s Day is celebrated November 20.
The celebation is also meant to create awareness to government agencies in regards to programs for children in need. It also serves as a way to educate the parents of these children on ways to get help and improve the lives of their families.
UNICEF’s mission is to advocate for the protection of children’s rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities, reach their full potential, provide special care as well as protection.
