Not to be confused with Mexican Independence Day, which takes place on September 16, Cinco de Mayo is May 5th. On this date in 1862, the Mexican army defeated a military assault from France—known as La Batalla de Puebla (the battle of Puebla).

In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is mainly observed in the state of Puebla where the victory occurred. Military parades, battle recreations and festive music line the streets. Ironically, the holiday is more popular in the United States than the rest of Mexico and is seen more of a cultural celebration among Mexican-Americans and areas with a large Mexican population.

As with most holidays, food and beverages are enjoyed. Tacos, chips and salsa are the food of choice. And let’s not forget beverages such as margaritas and of course, Mexican beer. The preferred Mexican beer of choice is Corona Extra. Besides enjoying Corona with a lime wedge, one very popular Mexican beer drink served on this day is a michelada. Depending on who you discuss this with, a michelada has a variety of ingredients. I grew up in a border town, and my version of a michelada is Corona, lots of lime juice, a dash of seasoning sauce, ice, and sea salt. That’s it. Other places serve it with clam and tomato juice, soy sauce, and lots of chili powder. I love both versions.

Recently, I stumbled upon a new version of a michelada. This one is called Picante Picante. A picante picante calls for Corona, ice, lime juice and tequila. A brand new recipe to add to my Cinco de Mayo spread this year.

If you don’t celebrate Cinco de Mayo, then you need to start. It’s a great reason to gather friends and spend a day full of laughter, good food and amazing beverages. Set up a taco or tostada bar and have your guests create their own version of a michelada. You never know, a brand new Corona michelada gem recipe might be created—just like this one.
