Treat mom a very special brunch: Banana Pancakes with Brown Butter Dulce de Leche Sauce
Is it me or am I seeing brown butter everywhere these days? Maybe it’s a fantasy of mine, but I think it’s becoming a trend if it isn’t one already. I’m going to go ahead and embrace it and contribute to the deliciousness by making my very own banana pancakes with a very special brown butter dulce de leche sauce to drizzle over them.
Pancakes already taste wonderful with bananas as part of the ingredients, but brown butter dulce de leche sauce will make this recipe shine like no other.
The sauce is made in under 10 minutes and can be refrigerated in a tight sealed jar. You will want to make a big batch. Trust me! Besides pancakes, you can spread it on toast and crepes, dollop on oatmeal, decorate a cake and my favorite, drizzle over fresh fruit. You will love it!
Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and guess what? I will be making these for myself, my mother and any other mamas that want to join me in this breakfast-brunch spread. It’s a great way to spoil Mom and a recipe easy enough the entire family can join in the making. The best gift, don’t you think?

Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- pinch ground nutmeg
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 egg, beaten
- 3 tablespoons Land O Lakes® Butter with Canola Oil Plus Calcium & Vitamin D, melted and cooled
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 ripe bananas, mashed
- banana slices and walnuts for garnish
- dulce de leche sauce*
- ½ cup Land O Lakes® Butter with Canola Oil Plus Calcium & Vitamin D
- ¾ cups dark brown sugar
- 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 pinch salt
Instructions
- Combine flour, dark brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg in a large bowl. Whisk until ingredients combine. Set aside.
- Combine buttermilk, egg, butter, honey, vanilla extract and bananas in a separate large bowl. Whisk together until combined.
- Whisk in wet ingredients into dry ingredients. Whisk until ingredients form a batter.
- Heat a large non-stick pan or skillet over medium heat. Pour in 1/3 cup batter and extend into a circular shape with the back of a spoon. Cook for 1 minute or until edges are dry and batter is bubbly. Flip pancake and cook other side for 1 minute. Place in a serving plate and garnish with banana slices, walnuts and brown butter dulce de leche sauce.
- Melt butter in a medium saucepan, stir constantly. Frothing or bubbling is normal. Butter will continue to cook and release a nutty smell. Once the butter reaches a golden brown color, immediately add brown sugar, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla and salt. Bring to a boil.
- Decrease heat, continue cooking and stir frequently with a rubber spatula until the mixture is completely mixed, thick and dark in color. About 4 minutes.
- Remove from heat, drizzle over pancakes and enjoy. Reserve remaining sauce in a tightly sealed jar and refrigerate.
