Avocado Chocolate Almond Butter Smoothie
This is part of a sponsored campaign with DiMe Media and Hass Avocado Board. However, all opinions expressed are my own.
There are some flavor combinations that take me back to those early school mornings of my childhood. Chocolate, banana, milk and vanilla is one of them and it is a mixture I hold near and dear to my heart. My mom would call the mixture “ponche” or “licuado”, and on hot mornings, she would add ice to convert this smoothie into a frappe and send me off to school.
Fast forward to my high school and college years. I still loved this combination of flavors but with my family history of diabetes and cholesterol, I decided to revamp my childhood favorite drink by adding some creamy Hass avocado and decreasing the sugar this beverage called for. By adding avocado, what I consider the most perfect food, and decreasing the sugar, I am able to help decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes. Now that I’m older, I continue to enjoy my new and improved childhood smoothie on a regular basis.
By gradually improving my eating habits and maintaining a healthy weight, I’m able to keep type 2 diabetes at bay. Avocados are virtually the only fruit that contains monounsaturated fat, and they are sodium, cholesterol and trans-fat free. It doesn’t get more perfect than that. If smoothies are not your thing, add Hass avocados to your breakfast. Smash them on your toast and season with cracked pepper and sea salt. My mouth just waters when I think about it.
Need more ideas to enjoy Hass avocados? Make good ol’ guacamole and give it a sweet and spicy kick by adding dried chile flakes, and fruit such as mango chunks, pineapple pieces, cubed strawberries or pomegranate arils. It’s an unexpected sweet and savory combination you will thoroughly enjoy.
