Tips on How to Run a Smooth Morning Routine

Establishing a smooth morning routine takes time and patience. I’ve come to the realization that it must be reevaluated every school year as my child grows and his needs, activities and motivation differ. He is of school age now and can do a lot on his own. As long as I keep the flow of the morning schedule, I make it easy for him to do his part. This avoids frustration, stress and tears. Not a good way to start the day.
Meal prep: Our morning routine begins on Sunday. I sit down with my son and go over his lunches and snacks for the week. After grocery shopping, I prep as many meals as I can. Sometimes it’s five, sometimes it is just one. As long as I pack each lunch the night before, I am one day ahead. This includes any snacks for recess and filling his water bottle.
Keep it fun: We have our breakfast routine down to a science. During our shopping trips, we look for fun and new products to try. Having a variety of breakfast options also helps build excitement. General Mills now has a series of new cereals at Walmart to incorporate into your morning routine. We are fan of churros AND Cinnamon Toast Crunch, it was only perfect for us to try out Cinnamon Toast Crunch Churros this week.
Set the Breakfast Table Ahead of Time: Cereal for breakfast is a great way to save time. We have a designated cereal pantry located low where my son can reach it. He can choose the cereal and bowl he wants and prepare his own. He’s become an expert in pouring his own milk. We might set the breakfast table ahead of time too. You will be surprised how much time is saved.
Create an Organizing System for the Week’s Outfits: We have a hanging canvas sweater organizer in the closet that we use strictly for this. Each compartment represents each day of the week. We also have a designated hook for the backpack. This keeps it from getting lost in the house. Easy! No fuss and no wasting time looking for the backpack and trying to figure out what clothes is clean and what is not.
Bedtime is very important: As always recommended, have your child get full night’s sleep. Keep electronic devices away for at least an hour before bedtime. They are too distracting and over stimulating. Reading a book is best.
These are just a few tips that have proven effective for us. This system has saved us from lots of meltdowns and frustrations and has created a harmonious morning routine that has helped us bond through the years. Hope it works for you!
