A fragrant fruity drink you will love this holiday season: Ponche Navideño | Mexican Christmas Punch

We finally felt a chill in the air in Southern California.  We turned on our heater and headed to the fresh Christmas tree lot to purchase our tree.  Following our Christmas decorating tradition, we turned it into an event.  The first holiday tunes were played, and I made Ponche Navideño, or Mexican Christmas Punch. It set  the holiday spirit and to filled our home with that eminent aroma of the iconic drink.

Mexican Christmas punch is a hot-fruity drink made with or without alcohol during the holiday season.  The fruit mixture is up to you.  Traditional punches are made with sugar cane, tejocote (Mexican hawthorne) and guava.  This variation I found in LograMasConTuCocina.com uses fruit that is readily available in the produce department of your grocery store.  You might already have the fruit you need in your fruit bowl: apples, oranges and pears. And you can’t beat the 40 calories per serving.

The base of this punch is cinnamon, guava nectar and green tea.  Yes, you read that correctly.  I used Lipton® Green Tea in this recipe.  Lipton® Green Tea is unsweetened 100% Natural Green Tea, which contains about 50 mg flavonoids per serving.  You need to consume at least 400 mg of flavonoids to help maintain a happy heart as part of the a diet consistent with dietary guidelines.  So drink up!

Need another reason to add green tea to your drinks?  Lipton’s Black and Green tea is sustainably sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified estates.  An independent organization that works with individuals, communities and companies to reduce environmental impacts and ensure sustainable livelihoods.

If you are hosting a posada this year.  This is a great beverage your everyone will enjoy.  If you are looking to turn this recipe into a cocktail recipe, all you have to do is  add an ounce of dark rum to your mug and stir.
