During my elementary school years, I visited my grandmother in Mexico quite often. As soon as vacation began, I hopped on a bus with my older brother and a sack lunch and headed off with excitement. I consider that period of time one of the most important in my life. I not only had the opportunity to create special moments with my grandmother, but I feel I gained lots of independence and business sense during those memorable times I will forever cherish.
My grandmother owned a miscelánea, a convenience store, that sold miscellaneous items, just as its name suggests. From laundry soap, to rice by the pound to ready made food and beverages. You named it, she had it. My duties were to greet the bread delivery man at the crack of dawn, prep the butcher paper for dry goods and make the aguas frescas for the day.
One of my favorite aguas frescas to prepare was agua de coco y nuez – coconut pecan agua fresca. This refreshing drink has a base of coconut milk and water and always sweetened with La Lechera Sweetened Condensed Milk to maintain its creaminess. With just a touch of vanilla and cinnamon, this drink is heavenly over ice!
Now that my son’s palate is developing, I wanted to introduce to him the sweet nuttiness of this delicious drink. I also wanted to keep using the same ingredients like La Lechera Sweetened Condensed milk to keep the authenticity of the drink I remember so fondly. I felt confident he would love it as much as I did when I was his age because it has a similar taste to horchata, one of his favorite drinks.
Making this drink with him took me back to such sweet times with my grandmother.
