Today I bring you something refreshing and maybe  a bit unexpected.  I was exploring the produce section at my local Latino market for recipe inspiration when I focused my sights on a green bed of beautiful, fresh alfalfa.  Yes alfalfa!   I was so excited to have found it that I quickly grabbed a couple of bunches, some limes and fragrant guavas. It was agua fresca time!

The colors and aromas brought back those fall afternoons in my home in Mexico. We knew it was time for our “agua” when the noisy blender rattled the kitchen walls and mom shouted our names out the window in a muffled voice.

Once our busy afternoon of playing listones and la cuerda was over, my mom served this thirst quencher to my siblings and I to help our digestion.  It was such a welcomed treat for us because it was sweet and tasty.  Never knowing it was packed with a good amount protein and fiber.

If you are lucky enough to find fresh alfalfa at your local grocery store or farmer’s market, give this recipe a try. It’s simple to prepare in just  a few minutes and so nutritious.  To sweeten, I use sugar but can easily be sweetened with honey and agave nectar.

If you’re not a fan of guavas, just omit them.  The drink is just as delicious but less thick and will give it more of a citrusy lemonade taste.
